At the dawn of World War 2 in German-occupied Poland, Oskar (Jonathan Scarfe, "ER"), a disenchanted German soldier, saves the life of Rachel (Nina Dobrev, "Fugitive Pieces"), a Rabbi's daughter dying in a blizzard. They fall in love but are forced apart in a wave of violent village massacres.
Oskar's mother, Marlene (Daryl Hannah, "Kill Bill", "Wall Street") pushes him to resist his father General Koenig's (Kim Coates, "Prison Break", "Black Hawk Down") commitment to war and country. She appeals to him to find his true love at all costs.
On the run from the German war machine, pregnant and resigned to the fact she will never again see Oskar, Rachel is married to honorable Bernard (Zachary Bennett, "Stir of Echoes: The Homecoming") by the Rabbi (Roy Scheider, "Jaws", "All That Jazz"), a wise man who is in hiding from the Nazis.
At the dangerous Russian front lines where violent skirmishes herald a great battle ahead, a chance reunion between Rachel and Oskar leads to hope, tragedy and one man's ultimate sacrifice.
