After having a meltdown at a grade school career day he drowns his sorrows at the local ice cream shop.  There he meets the ever optimistic and quirky Beth (Sarah Silverman).  Beth’s cheerful personality masks her sadness over her empty life and the two soon become friends and lovers. Filling the other’s void, the couple may have found that one someone to eat cheese with.

Sloan helps Laura escape from her hospital prison only to discover that Volpe is about to enter her dreams.

They consummate their immense attraction to each other despite her being the daughter of a Rabbi, and engaged to Bernard, an orthodox Jew in her village. Rachel returns to her village to find it and its inhabitants destroyed by German soldiers. Oskar rides in, saves both her and Bernard, her fiancé, and sends them, with horses and money, toward the Russian front. It’s a dangerous journey but their only hope. Rachel soon discovers she’s pregnant with Oskar’s child. Bernard forgives her, pledges his love and they marry. Rachel gives birth to a baby boy. She and Oskar unite at a German military camp. But her baby is killed. She and Bernard flee the camp after Rachel kills the German that killed her baby. Bernard sacrifices his life so that Rachel can live and re-unite with Oskar.
